Enterolith ileus as a complication of small bowel diverticulosis.

چکیده
We report a case of small bowel obstruction which was found to be due to an enterolith obstructing the distal ileum in the manner of "gallstone ileus." The enterolith had formed in an acquired jejunal diverticulum. We review the accepted mechanism of formation of these "stones" and propose a protocol for treatment of this rare complication.

Primarily Proximal Jejunal Stone Causing Enterolith Ileus in a Patient without Evidence of Cholecystoenteric Fistula or Jejunal Diverticulosis
Stone formation within the intestinal lumen is called enterolith. This stone can encroach into the lumen causing obstruction and surgical emergency. Jejunal obstruction by an enterolith is a very rare entity and often missed preoperatively. To our knowledge, most cases of jejunal obstruction, secondary to stone, were associated with biliary disease (cholecystoenteric fistula), bezoar, jejunal d...
متن کاملLarge Enterolith Complicating a Meckel Diverticulum Causing Obstructive Ileus in an Adolescent Male Patient
We present a unique case of a 16-year-old male patient who was eventually diagnosed with a large enterolith arising from a Meckel's diverticulum. The enterolith had caused intermittent intestinal symptoms for three years before resulting in small bowel obstruction requiring surgical intervention. Meckel's enterolith ileus is very rare with only few cases described in the literature. To our know...
متن کاملComplicated Jejunal Diverticulosis: Small Bowel Volvulus with Obstruction
he incidence of the diverticulum of the small bowel varies from 0.2-1.3% in autopsy studies to 2.3% when assessed on enteroclysis. It occurs mostly in patients in the 6th decade of their life. Of all the small bowel diverticuli, jejunal diverticulum is the most common type. This rare entity is usually asymptomatic. However, they may cause chronic non-specific symptoms for a long period of time ...
متن کاملSmall bowel obstruction with multiple perforations due to enterolith (bezoar) formed without gastrointestinal pathology.
An enterolith (bezoar) usually originates in an intestinal diverticulum or in a segment of bowel loculated by stricture formation. Stasis promotes its formation. This communication describes a case in which a large enterolith caused obstruction and multiple perforations of the terminal ileum in the absence of any predisposing gastrointestinal pathology. The management of this rare occurrence is...
متن کاملSELF ASSESSMENT ANSWERS An interesting case of small bowel obstruction
Q4: What are the possible treatment options? The simplest surgical option for small or crushable enteroliths is to milk them distally into the caecum and allow them to pass naturally. If this is not possible, the treatment of this condition is an enterotomy to remove the enterolith with or without resection of the segment of small bowel involved with diverticulosis. Resection may be advocated i...
